| RAM-Boat 8 is the University of Rhode Island’s 8th entry into the AUVSI International AUV competition. URI was very successful in its early years with a lightweight small torpedo design with a single propeller. But as the competition tasks grew more complicated, it became clear that our “flyer” design which had to swim to stay underwater could no longer compete. RAM-Boat 8 represents the 2nd year of a completely new AUV design for URI’s AUV team. This effort was dictated by the increasing complexity of the AUVSI competition, which more and more tended to favor ROV-like AUVs capable of hovering, vertical descent, and now even object recovery. Although these tasks are routine for a ROV, they represent a considerable challenge for an AUV. RAM-Boat 8 was designed with the AUVSI competition tasks in mind, and incorporated into the URI Ocean Engineering coursework in Robotic Ocean Instrumentation.
