It is concerned with the development and use of acoustical techniques to measure and understand physical, biological, geological and chemical parameters and processes of the sea. 	Acoustic image of a deep ocean hydrothermal plume ('black smoker') at the Main Endeavor segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. The image is a 3D rendering of volume backscatter strength from the plume. The data was collected using a high-frequency (200 kHz) multi-beam sonar system mounted on the WHOI Jason ROV at a depth of approx. 2.5 km.[Chris Jones and Darrell Jackson (APL/UW), David Palmer (NOAA), Peter Rona and Karen Bemis (Rutgers).]
