Jeffrey C. Harris, an Ocean Engineering graduate
student, has recently been awarded a "National Defense Science and
Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) fellowship". This is a prestigious fellowship
administered by the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE), and one
of ways the Department of Defense supports graduate student research.

Approximately 180 students nationwide are accepted in
this program each year, at the beginning of their graduate work, to be funded
for up to three years in the pursuit of a doctoral degree. He is the only
student from the University of Rhode Island to be accepted this year.
Jeff is currently finishing the second year of his
graduate work in ocean engineering, working under Dr. Stephan Grilli's
supervision and focusing on numerical simulations of high speed surface effect
ship performance. Specifically, he is working on a Numerical Wave Tank based on
the boundary element method (BEM), to simulate wave resistance of the Harley
Surface Effect Ship (SES). Jeff joined OCE in 2003, when he was barely 19 years
old, have received two bachelor's degrees in mathematics and oceanography from
the University of Washington. He is scheduled to complete his MS this summer
and to continue working on his Ph.D.
