Name of Scholarship: Lily and Catello Sorrentino Memorial Scholarship Purpose: The Lily and Catello Sorrentino Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1997 to encourage older students to return to undergraduate school for further education. Applicants must be 45 years of age or older and attending any degree conferring, non-parochial educational college or university, either on a full-time or part-time basis, within Rhode Island. Deadline: May 13, 2005 Award: Numerous awards ranging from $350 to $1,000 will be given annually. Name of Scholarship: Bruce and Marjorie Sundlun Scholarship Purpose: The Bruce and Marjorie Sundlun Scholarship Fund was established in 1990 with contributions from numerous individuals and nonprofit organizations who wanted to recognize Governor and Mrs. Sundlun for their devotion, leadership and financial commitment to the State's nonprofit sector. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist single parents in the pursuit of an education beyond high school. Deadline: Jun10 2005 Award: Three to five scholarships ranging from $250 to $1,000 will be given annually. Selection Critera/More Information: Preference is given to single parents, either male or female, who are currently enrolled in a Rhode Island institute of higher learning or continuing education. This may include enrollment in an academic, trade, or vocational program. Preference will be given to applicants who are completing their first degree or certificate program. Applicants who are currently receiving public assistance, have recently received public assistance, or will soon be released from prison are encouraged to apply. Name of Scholarship: Rhode Island Commission on Women/Freda Goldman Education Award Purpose: The Rhode Island Commission on Women Freda H. Goldman Education Awards Fund, which was established at The Rhode Island Community Foundation in 1997, provides annual awards to Rhode Island women who need financial assistance in order to pursue an education or job training beyond high school. The awards are given for transportation, child-care, tutoring, educational materials or other support services (not including tuition) that may be necessary to help women complete their educational goals. Preference will be given to highly motivated, self-supporting low-income women. Deadline: June 13, 2005 Award: Number and amount of awards vary. Renewable. Selection Critera/More Information: In order to qualify as an applicant, you must meet the following criteria: Either preparing for a nontraditional job or career through an educational program; or returning to the labor market in need of training to sharpen your skills; or be an ex-offender wishing to undertake vocational or career education and training; or be a displaced homemaker and/or single mother wishing to further your education.
